September 2017 Member Newsletter

President’s Message

Hello COVR Members,

For the past several years COVR has been transitioning to a new organizational model. Our goal is to become more inclusive and to establish a broader membership base.

In 1998, when COVR was founded, the New Age marketplace was dominated by retailers, publishers, and few vendors here and there. Twenty years have brought many changes but in many respects the COVR model has continued to represent the old reality.

One of the things we are working on changing is our membership model. Under the existing model there is one membership category with fixed annual dues. This structure comes from a world where we expect COVR’s members to be primarily established, stable businesses, while smaller businesses “wobble” in their membership, and there has not been much outreach to the smallest businesses or to the many people who connect with our industry in non-traditional ways.

We are now beginning to phase out this old model.

Under our new membership model we plan to offer three membership tiers. They will be (a) Platinum, (b) Gold, and (c) Silver. We have defined the membership privileges of each category and we’re now beginning to implement them. In brief, the Platinum level will be what we used to call Sponsors. The Gold level will replace our old Regular membership level. And the Silver level will be a new, free membership that will get the newsletter but have limited access to the full content.

The new membership levels aren’t fully set up yet. (The new website is balking, and we’re all volunteers here so it might take a while longer.) You can get a preview here: Join Us (https://covr.org/membership/joinnow/) . You can sign up at a new level but if you currently have an active membership the site will just add a new membership on top of it.

We hope this new system will allow more people and businesses to identify with and become a part of the Mind Body Spirit marketplace. If you have feedback for us, please let me know.

** Backorders: A Missed Opportunity?
————————————————————

To backorder or not to backorder?

To backorder or not to backorder; that, my friends is a loaded question. At DeVorss, we are also faced with the same dilemma, though on a different scale. Unfortunately, we don’t have a crystal ball to determine which books to backorder or how many to stock. There are several factors that play a part in this, and so far we have not figured out a foolproof method. However, what we have found to be a benefit is actually communicating with the customer. Communication is key with our customers!

When our customers place an order and the item or items appear to be out of stock, we do our best to communicate and encourage our customers to backorder. This allows me to run a report that captures activity and interest in the title(s) ordered and allows for forecasting and compiling PO’s. We also have minimums to meet, and if I’m able to see a demand for a title(s) then I can forecast and order accordingly. This ensures that their backorder is filled as soon as inventory arrives into our warehouse.

Journeys of Life is tucked away on a quiet side street in a five block residential neighborhood shopping district known as Shadyside, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Opened in 1989, in an 800 square-foot second floor walkup, the focus was primarily books about life issues, 12 step recovery, and gifts that would support those topics. Journeys quickly outgrew the original location and in 1991 moved to the present location on Bellefonte Street, which featured more selling space that allowed for expansion of topics. It has evolved into a store with products that inspire, delight, educate, bring meaning and joy. They have a mission to facilitate options for self-discovery and provide new pathways to enhance your personal journey.
